Revolutionizing Automotive Art: Introducing the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA

Art and innovation converge as BMW Group unveils the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA at the esteemed Frieze Los Angeles art fair. This groundbreaking vehicle marries cutting-edge color-change technology with the artistic flair of South African luminary Esther Mahlangu. The result is a one-of-a-kind automotive masterpiece that celebrates both BMW’s heritage and contemporary artistic expression.

Debuting on February 29th at the fair’s opening, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA is a testament to the brand’s commitment to pushing boundaries. Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, emphasizes, “The BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA honors the history of the BMW brand and continues the story of our global cultural engagement in a unique way. It combines art and design through progressive technology. Here, technology itself becomes art.”

Esther Mahlangu, renowned for her distinctive Ndebele paintings, previously collaborated with BMW in 1991 to create the 12th BMW Art Car, marking her as the first woman and African artist to do so. Now, her signature colors and geometric patterns adorn the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, brought to life through innovative Flow technology. Mahlangu expresses her excitement, stating, “It is fascinating to me to see how modern technology can expand my art and make it accessible to a completely new audience.”

The BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA features electronically animated sections of film applied across its surface. Similar to an e-book reader, millions of microcapsules within each E Ink film allow for dynamic changes in color and pattern when an electric voltage is applied. This technology not only pays homage to Mahlangu’s art but also elevates the vehicle into a dynamic work of art in its own right.

Adding another layer of creativity, Renzo Vitale, the BMW Group’s Creative Director, Sound, composes a unique sound experience for the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. By blending Mahlangu’s voice, the sound of her painting tools, and BMW’s brand soundscape, Vitale creates a captivating auditory accompaniment that synchronizes with the vehicle’s color animations.

With meticulous attention to detail, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA boasts 1,349 individually controlled sections of film, each precisely crafted to recreate Mahlangu’s intricate ornamentation. Developed in collaboration with E Ink, the technology seamlessly adapts to curved surfaces, offering a glimpse into the future of automotive design.

While the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA remains a singular creation for now, it represents the ongoing evolution of color-change technology pioneered by BMW. From the BMW iX Flow to the BMW i Vision Dee, advancements continue to expand the possibilities of dynamic surface design, hinting at exciting prospects for future production models.

Beyond innovation, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA pays tribute to Esther Mahlangu’s enduring legacy as a cultural icon. As her art transcends mediums, from canvas to automotive surfaces, BMW reaffirms its commitment to fostering creative dialogue between art and technology.

In conjunction with the unveiling of the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, BMW showcases the BMW Art Car designed by Mahlangu at the Iziko Museums of South Africa in Cape Town. This retrospective exhibition celebrates Mahlangu’s profound influence on the art world and her pivotal role as a cultural ambassador.

As BMW continues to engage with the global arts community, the Frieze Los Angeles art fair serves as a platform for creative exchange. Through initiatives like Frieze Music, BMW reaffirms its dedication to exploring the intersection of music and art, enriching cultural experiences for audiences worldwide.

In the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, artistry and innovation intertwine, heralding a new chapter in automotive design and cultural collaboration.
